La Antigua Galería de Arte is honored to present Mexican artist Jorge Mercado in a very special exhibit entitled "Viaje a Las Profundidades" or "Journey to the Underworld".  The collection gathers woodblock, lithographs and aquatints that delight jocosely in Mexico´s veneration of death and the grotesque.  Mercado´s work rummages deep into a sinister though not menacing world in which we can amuse ourselves.  A world, to use Jules Verne´s words, although "in the very deepest of unknown depths, there was something not unpleasant about it.

More than 20 woodblocks, lithographs and aquatints will be on display. The exhibit will be open to the public throughout the month of November.

5ª. Avenida Norte No. 29
By the Arch of Antigua
Opening: 4 to 7pm

La Antigua Galería de Arte has the pleasure of presenting Antigua artist Mario Garcia in a one man exhibit entitled “Carrusel De Sueños”. As the title of the exhibit states, the source of inspiration for this new collection is the prolific universe of our childhood imagination and the land of dreams.  Thus, in poetic fashion and hallucinatory color childhood themes such as children galloping in carousels, amusing themselves at local fairs are depicted in a wide variety of art works opening our imagination to fantasy.
More than 30 acrylic paintings, watercolors, drawings and pastels will be displayed at this exhibit which will be inaugurated Saturday July 9th   from 4 to 7pm at La Antigua, Galería de Arte on 5a. Avenida Norte #29 near the Arch. The artist will be present at the opening.
About this collection the artist Mario Garcia says: “The freedom I experienced in my childhood dreams made me assume that such freedom could also exist in real life. Now I know, I can feel it, I'm free and I have no limitations because I found the perfect means to make my dreams come true.  On canvas, on paper, in a sculpture I can experience the same feeling as when I dreamed; my art works have become my "dreams of freedom".
Mario Garcia, was born in Antigua Guatemala.  He studied art at the National Fine Art School in Guatemala City.  He has a 20 year background in art and some of his pieces can be found in important collections worldwide. He has participated in numerous group shows and has received important awards.

Avenida Norte No. 29. Antigua Guatemala.  Entrada gratuita.

New Exhibit Opened on Saturday April 9th, 2016
at La Antigua Galería de Arte in
5ª. Avenida Norte No. 29 by the Arch

 “Nos-Otros”
La Antigua Galería de Arte proudly presents Keith L. Andrews in “one man collective show” entitled “Nos-Otros”. In this project one sculptor (Keith L. Andrews or KLA) works with a diversity of men and women, young and old, from five nations, using different media, sharing a diversity of visions and involving many working processes. The themes that are addressed include aging, dialogue, social realities, interpersonal conflicts, gender, trust, love, loss, morality and humor.
More than 20 pieces will be on display at our second location on 5a. Avenida Norte No. 29, by the Arch of Antigua.

CHAT SHOW:
A conversation or Chat with the artist and a few of his collaborators has been
scheduled for Saturday April 16th, 5 to 7pm.

Visiting hours: 10am to 9pm Monday through Sunday

What better words to speak about this exhibit than the words of the main artist:

 “Nos-Otros”
Nos-otros is an exploration of the processes used by creative people, especially visual artists, working together and of the consequences of their collaboration. While explicit collaboration among equals is the norm in most human activities - in business, science, social activities, music, dance, film, and most others - it is relatively uncommon in the visual arts. In the name of “authenticity” and “originality”, visual artists (like authors) generally are expected to practice solo creation.
Sorry, there’s nothing decorative here.
As the result of the results and lessons that emerge from the collaborations among artists of various disciplines and outlooks, we can attempt to answer questions like:
What happens when two or more artists who have never worked together conceive of and carry out an original creation? What are the steps and missteps in arriving at a decision regarding the project? What tensions arise? How is the practice of each artist affected? How does each artist remain true to a personal vision while being respectful of and learning from the other? How does interaction create new practice? What kinds of synergies are possible? How much does one find out about one’s self by going outside of one’s normal area of comfort? How does the artist remain true to core values while growing by working with another? What are the implications of the answers to these questions for other creative human interactions?

In this exposition there are a total of 22 pieces.
Five pieces are created by one sculptor (KLA) working one-to-one with five different painters.
Three works come from the collaboration of three sculptors each working on an individual project with KLA.
There are two works that result from the collaboration of KLA with photographers.
KLA, a figurative sculptor, works with two conceptual artists.
KLA “illustrates” the work of one renowned novelist.
Three young female Guatemalan hip hop feminist musicians work with KLA as an old expat sculptor. One world famous poet unknowingly works with KLA on a project.
In addition to the 15 interpersonal collaborations, there are four examples of intrapersonal alliances. In these subpersonalities of KLA work together.

KLA’s previous one-person shows have included My Secret Life; Contextos/Con textos; Un Pedacito de Nosotos; Mujeres; and Lies, Gags, Screams and Really Good Taste.
He has participated in more than 20 group shows in the USA and throughout Central America.
His work is found in private collections in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, USA, and at least five Latin American nations.

"Travesía de Sueños" by Josué Hernández

La Antigua Galería de Arte proudly presents Guatemalan artist Josué Hernández in a one man exhibit entitled “Travesía de Sueños”.

More than 15 new watercolors in small and medium format will be on display. The exhibit opens Saturday February the 13th from 4 to 7pm. At La Antigua Galería de Arte on 5a. Avenida Norte No. 29 by the Arch. The artist will be present at the opening.

According to the artist the collection of watercolors is a visual interpretation of the American Dream and the goals of the individual to become someone in society. In colorful images his works express, in very poetic manner, all the sacrifices that people make travelling to a foreign country where they have to adopt a new language and new traditions and even sacrifice their own identity to grasp the American Dream.

Inauguración "Improvisaciones" de Ramón Ávila B.

La Antigua Galería de Arte is proud to present “Improvisaciones”, a one man show by Guatemalan Master Ramón Avila. The exhibit gathers choice pieces of the abstract art works the artist has produced in the last ten years and a collection of figurative works that date back to the early 1960s.
The exhibit opens Saturday January 16th and will be open until March the 15th.

His abstractions, a selected group of highly expressionistic works, drawings, oils and mixed mediums will be on display. In these, the intense drama achieved with the use of light and shadow, form and color result in highly evolved compositions. Albeit abstractions some of them represent recognizable forms, such as huge sailing vessels, the intricate pattern woven in a guatemalan textile or complex architectural designs to mention just a few. They also tend to create a powerful impression on the viewer, inspiring feelings of warmth, awe, joy, anger, melancholy.

The collection of figurative works from the early 1960s, is a group of paintings of diverse content; portraits and compositions that narrate and comment upon the social and political atmosphere of the time. They speak mostly of the strong impression living and settling in Guatemala made on Avila, an artist of Spanish origin. This series of paintings reflect the cultural and traditional elements of his adopted country viewed from a very personal and humane standpoint. The intention of showing this collection is to consolidate the work of the master who has had a long background as an artist and who has contributed enormously to the history of the fine arts in Guatemala.
