Inauguración "Improvisaciones" de Ramón Ávila B.

La Antigua Galería de Arte is proud to present “Improvisaciones”, a one man show by Guatemalan Master Ramón Avila. The exhibit gathers choice pieces of the abstract art works the artist has produced in the last ten years and a collection of figurative works that date back to the early 1960s.
The exhibit opens Saturday January 16th and will be open until March the 15th.

His abstractions, a selected group of highly expressionistic works, drawings, oils and mixed mediums will be on display. In these, the intense drama achieved with the use of light and shadow, form and color result in highly evolved compositions. Albeit abstractions some of them represent recognizable forms, such as huge sailing vessels, the intricate pattern woven in a guatemalan textile or complex architectural designs to mention just a few. They also tend to create a powerful impression on the viewer, inspiring feelings of warmth, awe, joy, anger, melancholy.

The collection of figurative works from the early 1960s, is a group of paintings of diverse content; portraits and compositions that narrate and comment upon the social and political atmosphere of the time. They speak mostly of the strong impression living and settling in Guatemala made on Avila, an artist of Spanish origin. This series of paintings reflect the cultural and traditional elements of his adopted country viewed from a very personal and humane standpoint. The intention of showing this collection is to consolidate the work of the master who has had a long background as an artist and who has contributed enormously to the history of the fine arts in Guatemala.
